Fact #1: Many people don’t consider whether or not to have children a CHOICE.
Right or wrong, the majority of the population of many societies across the globe have gone through life believing that procreating is a mandate, and the purpose of marriage is to fulfill that mandate – it’s just part of life. Animal instinct and religious imperative has passed on that belief in generation after generation throughout history.
Fortunately that perception is starting to change. Recent studies by Pew Research showed that the number of people who consider “children very important to a successful marriage” is now less than 1 in 2, having dropped significantly from 65% in 1970 to 41% today.
And communities like DINKlife can further the cause. We are responsible for communicating the message that WHEN and IF you have children, is a choice, and it is only yours to make.
So what can we do?
Fact#2: 35% of children in the U.S. were conceived by accident (it might even be closer to 50%)
More than one in three parents didn’t even plan to conceive. Accidental pregnancies can happen to anyone, and abortion is not seen as a choice for many due to financial restraints or deep-rooted religious beliefs.
How can we help? Ensuring that birth control is available to all, that pregnancy prevention education is delivered to everyone, and that organizations like Planned Parenthood are around to help in time of need. Write to your Congress-person to be a catalyst and supporter for these initiatives.
Fact # 3: Parenting is not a class we take in high school
While we had entire semesters dedicated to advanced Calculus and racquetball, we had nothing more than a day’s worth of carrying around a fake belly as part of freshmen Home Economics to teach the skills necessary to raising the leaders of tomorrow.
What can we do? Having no children ourselves, we’re not the obvious choice to lead the better parenting education movement, but we can certainly help those that are. Check out some great work that’s being done by the organizations near you and see how you can get involved.
As DINKs, we have the clarity of perspective to be understanding, and the time and money to lead or support initiatives that will help all of us going forward. Join me here and now for a revolution in thinking. Let’s ban hateful terms like “breeders” from our language and turn our energies toward helping others make the right choices. It just might inspire others to look at us in a more favorable light.
