Life Abroad: The Ultimate DINK Vacation

With the average vacation lasting only about a week, do you ever feel like you’re just passing by a few things, snapping some quick pics and then grabbing a cab to the airport? For a true mind-expanding experience, try relocating temporarily and living abroad for a month or three.

Walking your new neighborhood in London

Ever wish you could just leave your normal life behind and live in a far away land? Imagining drinking your morning coffee overlooking Roman ruins, or feeling like locals in rural Peru? It’s actually easier than it sounds. If you plan it right, you can call anywhere home for a couple of months. Here’s what you’ll need to take care of before you take off on an adventure of your own:

Visa and Passport Business

Americans don’t need a visa for travelling to many international destinations – especially when it’s for 3 months or less. But some places, such as many countries in South East Asia, do require them. Another thing to remember when traveling for long periods of time is your passport – make sure it doesn’t expire before your trip ends, and make sure it meets the requirements of your destination. Some countries require you to have at least six months validity remaining when you clear customs. If you’re unsure about the visa and passport requirements for your desired destination, check out the country specific information posted at Travel State Gov.

What to Do About Work?

The key to spending time abroad without diminishing your savings or getting into debt is to work while you’re doing it. If you and your S.O. already have jobs that allow you to work remotely - freelance writer, IT consultant, a remote software engineer, online customer service rep, etc. - you might as well leave next week! But if one or both of you is regularly tethered to an office, you may be able to work out an arrangement with your employers to work remotely for a month or two. Before you give up and expect a “no”, remember that it’s becoming more of a common trend these days, with email, chat, and web-based collaboration apps making it possible to work from anywhere.

So what about money? Your Dual Income means you can bulk up your savings twice as fast. With savings dedicated for your adventure abroad, you have the option to take a leave of absence from your job. Many employers will allow workers to take up to three months leave of absence for personal reasons.

If your day-to-day feels like being a collator at Initech, take the leap; tell them to shove those TPS reports and find a new job upon your return. Or, if you’ve been right-sized, even easier. Take this as a perfect opportunity to spend time abroad, especially if you have a few months severance pay.

COMMENTS:

Every time I travel overseas I get that crazy urge to live abroad...and then I come home to familiar comforts and it suddenly seems so distant. I'm constantly amazed and inspired by the people that make it happen. It's still on my bucket list.

Living abroad is such an amazing experience! It broadens your perspective unlike anything you can imagine. We managed to do this in between jobs; we sub-let our place out to my sister for the summer and found a great deal on a rental. Find a way to make it happen and then do it!
