Top 5 U.S. Cities for DINKs to Call Home

Metropolitan areas are like a natural habitat for DINKs. But which ones really make the grade when meeting our unique needs? Check out our list of the top 5 places where you’ll feel right at home.

Top 5 U.S. Cities for DINKs to Call Home

When you have the luxury of living wherever you want, not just any city will do. DINKs want it all—fast paced nightlife and serene outdoor settings. Places where we can advance in our careers and in our social lives. So we scoured the nation to discover the best cities for DINKs to prosper in. Looking to relocate to the ultimate DINK zip code? Here’s our list of the top 5 places for DINKs to call home.

1. San Francisco, California

Maybe we’re a little biased, seeing as the DINKlife headquarters are in the City by the Bay. But we’re here for good reason. With an open-minded culture, plenty of tech job openings, amazing food, and Sonoma wine tasting weekends just a drive away, San Francisco is a DINK’s dream city. There is as much to enjoy outdoors here as there is city life, and it’s one of those rare urban areas where you can actually go surfing and skiing in the same day. And with more pet parents here than child parents, it’s also a great place for DINKs to meet likeminded people. According to the 2010 census, San Francisco is home to 120,000 canines compared to just 107,000 children.

2. New York, NY

Living in New York City is one of those things everyone should do in their lifetime, and there’s no better time than when you’re a DINK. Forget scraping by on Ramen noodles or living in the apartment equivalent of a shoebox. With two incomes, DINKs can actually afford to enjoy living in America’s most expensive city, and indulge in its amazing shopping, Broadway shows and thousands of restaurants. Plus, with our partners already at our sides, we are spared the grueling, exhausting dance that is dating in New York, which Psychology Today mathematically proves is a challenge in an article called “Why Dating Is Difficult in New York (or London).”

3. Washington, D.C.

Looking for a place to advance your career and associate with people as smart as you? Try calling our capital city home. With just 1.17 job-seekers per opening, Washington, D.C. topped Forbes’ list of the top 10 job markets in the U.S. And according to the US News and World Report, it’s one of the most educated cities in America. But don’t worry, it’s far from all work and no play. D.C. is teeming with cultural attractions, restaurants and nightlife. And with a central location, it’s perfectly positioned for you and your S.O. to take weekend getaways to beaches, mountains and neighboring East Coast urban hot spots.

A lot of couples would really agree on this one but as for me I have been to three places that was mentioned above which is in Washington, NY and SF. - Lindsay Rosenwald

Awesome article! I have never been to San Francisco, but it sounds wonderful. My husband and I live in KS, but are looking to relocate to a more DINK friendly city. This is very helpful!

I constantly dream of living in San Francisco. I go there when I can a d just soak it all in. Beautiful hills, no hot weather, charm, parks, sigh..... Did I mention running the golden gate and strolling all the great neighborhoods?????

As a Texan, Austin is our favorite weekend getaway (by car). The active outdoor lifestyle, the food, patios, lakes and natural springs, hill-country, live music, and laid-back culture is hard to beat.
