We've lived in the City for a few years now, and it seems there are more DINKs here than anywhere else I've been. The families tend to move out of the City obviously, leaving us and singles to make up a major piece of the pie, but doesn't that happen in other big cities like NYC or Chicago? They have high cost of living like we do, but just seems to be something special about SF.
Is it the "romance" of the City?
Agree. I would think it's the young demographic and progressive thinking prevalent here in SF. People are free to do what they wish and not be judged.
I agree - SF is perfect for DINKs. Small spaces, high cost of living, foodie-heaven, public transit, incredible social scene/nightlife, open-minded, and so on.
For bigger families...size and cost of real-estate is likely a contributing factor. Other cities, like Dallas, LA, Houston, and Phoenix seem better equipped to accommodate larger families.
