So to balance your portfolio and mitigate risk, consider dividing your money among a few different indexes, such as ones for large-caps, small-caps, international stocks, real estate, TIPS and bonds—how much you put in each depends on your aversion to risk. By using 5-7 index funds, you can create a diversified, low maintenance portfolio that only requires annual rebalancing (to keep the proportions constant).
Personally, I'm a fan of commodities, but there's always room to diversify.
